Established in 1994, the Nigerian Association of Wichita is a 501c(3) Non-Profit, non-political, non-sectarian,

Civic Organization.

 

The idea to form the Nigerian Association of Wichita (NAW) started with a deep and thoughtful conversation between several Nigerian individuals during a condolence visit to Dr. Edwin & Mrs. Patience Ekpo  on the passing of their daughter in Nigeria. The conversation started with a question: why do we always come together when something bad or unfortunate befall  someone in our community? So it became obvious an association had to be formed, and Mr. Larry Aginar, and Mr. Ben Machebe spearheaded the formation of the Association, NAW. 

Now, the next conversation was the monthly hosting schedules by individuals, and most importantly, where to host it. Mr. Ben Machebe then graciously volunteered to host that first meeting at the clubhouse of his apartment complex on Seneca and May street in Wichita, and the date was announced right there at the bereavement gathering. Quite a few Nigerians attended this inaugural meeting.  

At the end of this meeting, the attendees affirmatively  selected the first officials, with Mr. Joseph Onijala as the first President of NAW, and ever since, the Nigerian Association of Wichita have continued to grow strong in recognition, and thriving in Wichita, and beyond.

 

For operational purposes, NAW is organized into a men's branch and a women's branch. While each branch has it's own bylaws, and meets on different Sundays of the month, both branches submit to and are governed by one constitution.

NAW is dedicated to promoting the mutual well-being of it's members, and serving the Wichita community and beyond through charity, community service, and educational support. Our focus is on making a positive impact, fostering connections, and promoting cultural awareness. Our

very passionate members, strive to create meaningful change tailored to the unique needs of our community, and the state of Kansas in general.
